Crafting style and Substance with Hoste Cocktails

The ready-to-drink cocktail market is a crowded one with many taking to the canned single serve format as their preferred packaging format. It’s quick, easy, versatile, and lends itself to spontaneous occasions.

Many also take a light approach to their product. A lower ABV is typical, creating more of a bar mixer profile than a high end cocktail lounge experience.

Hoste bucks this trend with its 750ml glass bottle format, each one offering 10 servings. The releases are stronger than most – the Gold Fashioned comes in at 42.2% – and feel more at home by a roaring fire, served by attentive waiters. There’s an attention to detail and focus on quality that sets these mixes well apart from any competitors.

The annual Gold Fashioned release has just had its 2024 debut. A limited annual release, the Gold Fashioned celebrates the original classic cocktail with a blend of bespoke spirits, impeccably sourced hand selected ingredients and a first of its kind citrus zest atomizer for garnish.

“The Gold Fashioned is a labor of love and each year we look for new and interesting ways to elevate the offering,” says Hoste co-founder Robby Haynes.

“Part of what makes the 2024 release unique is that we sourced an uber rare 9 year ‘overproof’ bourbon – affectionately referred to as ‘Hazmat’ bourbon – and rested it in Oloroso Sherry Casks for 6 months before blending it with 10 and 6 year Rye Whiskies, plus our signature Saffron Bitters and Malawian Demerara. It’s a smooth and stately sipper that’s tailor-made for sharing with friends and family.”

A Mezcal Negroni for Christmas

The company also just released a Mezcal Negroni, an homage to the vibrant Mexican city of Oaxaca’s bold flavors and rich culinary traditions.

Coming in at 35%, the Mezcal Negroni uses Artisanal Mezcal Ensamble by Paquera with Little City Vermouth, a tamarind liqueur by Apologue, and a dash of mole bitters by Los Pacos. It comes with an orange zest atomizer.

“Each component of the Mezcal Negroni has been custom crafted to deliver the true essence of Oaxaca,” says Haynes.

“The Mezcal itself is an ‘Ensamble’ – a bespoke blend of both native Barill and Espadin Agave. The bitters were inspired by Los Pacos signature Mole Negro and feature Oaxacan Pasilla Chiles, Mexican Cacao and roasted Sesame Seeds. To round out the cocktail, we crated our own Tamarind Aperitivo and worked with Little City to create a complimentary sweet vermouth. Garnished with a spritz of fresh orange zest from the included atomizer, it’s a truly sensational, bold and adventurous cocktail.”

The release has been some time in the making. “Releasing an authentic and compelling Mezcal-based classic cocktail riff was a big goal of ours, something we knew we wanted to do but felt that we needed the right collaborator to make it happen. Stars aligned and our friends at Paquera Mezcal connected us with Pablo Jimenez – a Oaxacan-born Mezcal aficionado and head bartender at the renowned restaurant Los Pacos Oaxaca.”

Also part of Hoste’s current offerings is its Perfect Manhattan – an opportunity for Haynes and his team to kick things up to the next level. “A properly prepared Perfect Manhattan is a fine thing, requiring not only world class ingredients but an expert hand for balance,” says Haynes.

“For this cocktail, we partnered with Chicago-based bartender Julieta Campos and chose to focus on the Whiskey itself as a point of differentiation, working with the finish distillery Kyrö to source a well aged 100% Single Malt Finnish Rye Whiskey for the base, plus our house made Cherry Bitters that feature 3 different types of cherries take it over the top.”
